Diamondbacks to Host Ten Year World Championship Reunion

The weekend of September 9th, 10th and 11th the Arizona Diamondbacks will host a reunion of the 2001 World Series Championship team. During this series against the San Diego Padres the team will present a series of events, including a reunion of many of the players who made the World Series Championship a reality. Many of the attendees played in the actual World Series, others did not. They may have been part of the team during the regular season, others played in the Division Series or the NLCS but were not put on the World Series roster. In any case, any player, coach or team official affiliated with the Arizona Diamondbacks during the 2001 season contributed in some way to the team’s run for the Championship.

There are currently thirty-eight former players and team officials scheduled to attend the reunion, and it is possible in the next three days more could be added.

Three players who played key parts in the run to the World Series will not be attending the events of Reunion Weekend. However, this is not because they are not wanted or were not invited. Though there are some players from the 2001 Arizona Diamondbacks team who are still playing baseball in different leagues (for example, Mike Koplove plays for the Camden Riversharks of the Atlantic Baseball League), and others who are either coaching or broadcasting, only four members of the team are still active in Major League Baseball. Infielder Craig Counsell currently plays for the Milwaukee Brewers, catcher Rod Barajas plays for the Los Angeles Dodgers, pitcher  Miguel Batista plays for the  New York Mets, and infielder Lyle Overbay recently returned to the Diamondbacks.  Both Overbay and Koplove were rookies in 2001, and Overbay had only two at bats as a member of the 2001 team.

Friday, September 9th will be ‘Throwback Jersey Game’ with the 2011 team wearing the purple and teal pinstripes the 2001 team wore. The 6:40 p.m. game will be followed by a fireworks show, and fans are encouraged to wear their own retro colors throughout the weekend in celebration of the anniversary.

Saturday, September 10th will be the 2001 team reunion, and 25,000 World Championship Replica rings will be given away to the first 25,000 fans who enter Chase Field. Fans are encouraged to arrive at their seats early to welcome back the 2001 team during a ceremony prior to the game’s 5:10 p.m. start time. In addition, throughout the game the between inning breaks will be used for an inning by inning recap of Game Seven on Diamondbacks TV.

The thirty-eight players and officials currently scheduled to attend include:

Brian Anderson Midre Cummings Mark Grace Chad Moeller Bret Prinz
Jay Bell David Dellucci Ken Huckaby Lyle Overbay Curt Schilling
Bob Brenly Rich Dozer Randy Johnson Armando Reynoso Bob Welch
Danny Bautista Erubiel Durazo Mike Koplove Erik Sabel Matt Williams
Troy Brohawn Robert Ellis Albie Lopez Reggie Sanders Bobby Witt
Jerry Colangelo Steve Finley Matt Mantei Glen Sherlock Tony Womack
Greg Colbrunn Joe Garagiola, Jr. Damian Miller Junior Spivey
Jason Conti Luis Gonzalez Mike Mohler Greg Swindell

Sunday, September 11th, there will be a 9/11 Salute to Everyday Heroes with a Stars and Stripes Tee Shirt Giveaway. The first 15,000 fans who arrive at the ball park will receive a patriotic Diamondbacks stars and stripes tee shirt. Game time on Sunday is 1:10 p.m.
